MARGAO: Fatorda police have arrested five more persons in connection with the brutal assault on two youths at Mungul-Margao, in which swords, sticks and gunfire were used, leaving both victims hospitalised.
The arrested have been identified as Imran Bepari (38) of St Cruz, Akshay Talwar (22) of Borda, Avinash Gunjikar (31) of Navelim, Parshuram Rathod (32) of Belgaum, and Deepak Kattimani of Margao. Police also recovered a weapon during the operation.
The case relates to a pre-dawn attack on Friday when victims Rafiq Tashan (24) and Yuvkesh Singh Badaila (20) were intercepted near Shagun Restaurant along the Margao–Colva road.
Around 20 assailants, including Rahul Talwar of Borda, Wilson Carvalho, Shahrukh of Davorlim, Rasool of Margao and several masked men, allegedly arrived in multiple cars, set upon the victims with swords, sticks, soda bottles and koytas, and fired two bullets at their vehicle before fleeing.
The bullets struck the car, which was left badly damaged. Singh underwent surgery at Goa Medical College, while Tashan remains admitted in the ward.
Police said while five suspects have been arrested, several others are still absconding. A manhunt has been launched to track them down.
The case has sparked a political row and fuelled public concern over Goa’s law and order situation.
