PANAJI: Chairman of the Goa Football Development Council Glenn Ticlo on Saturday pledged renewed efforts to revive and elevate football across the state, stressing that the sport remains central to Goa’s identity and cultural fabric. He was addressing players, parents, and officials during a football kit distribution programme and felicitation ceremony for renowned coach Bibiano Fernandes at the Church Ground in Siolim.
Ticlo noted that despite improved facilities and access to grounds compared to earlier decades, football in Goa has been experiencing a worrying decline. He emphasized that reversing this trend requires collective effort, strong administration, and consistent support for coaches and ground staff. Assuring full backing, he said no shortcomings would be allowed to hinder training or development across the council’s centres.
Recalling the vision behind the creation of the GFDC, Ticlo highlighted its role in strengthening football at every level. He expressed gratitude to the state leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility and said all 36 football centres under the council would receive focused attention. Among the immediate priorities, he identified the appointment of a Technical Director and the revival of structured residential academies in North and South Goa to provide systematic training and holistic development for young players.
Ticlo also outlined plans to improve player welfare, including nutritional support through local self help groups. He stressed that discipline, punctuality, commitment, and sincerity are as important as skill, adding that sports play a vital role in shaping well rounded individuals alongside academics.
Praising Bibiano Fernandes for his achievements at the national level, Ticlo said his success has brought pride to both Goa and the country. Bibiano, in his interaction with young players, encouraged them to practice daily and manage their time efficiently alongside schoolwork, reminding them that consistency and dedication are key to progress.
Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo highlighted the crucial role parents play in nurturing both academic and sporting growth. She expressed confidence that under the current leadership, residential football academies closed during the pandemic would be restarted, paving the way for the emergence of top talent.
GFDC officials reiterated their focus on grassroots football, stating that providing kits and structured support boosts confidence and motivation among young aspirants. The Siolim centre continues to function under the guidance of its coaching and ground staff, serving as a key hub for nurturing future footballers.
