CANACONA: In one of the highest compensations ever granted in Goa for a wild animal attack, the Forest Department has reimbursed ₹85,000 to a woman injured in a wild boar attack in Poinguinim earlier this year.
Jayanti Velip, a resident of Gulem in VP Shristhal, was handed over the compensation cheque by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Harsh Gadte at a brief function held at the Canacona Forest Office. Range Forest Officer (Territorial) Anant Velip and other officials were also present.
The incident took place on February 4, when Jayanti Velip was working in a paddy field owned by Laxman Prabhugaonkar in Welwada, Poinguinim, during the Rabi cultivation season. She was suddenly attacked by a wild boar, suffering injuries to both hands, including cuts and bruises on her fingers and palms, as well as other parts of her body.
Following the attack, the landowner Prabhugaonkar filed a formal complaint with the Forest Department, seeking compensation for the injuries and financial losses suffered by the worker.
After evaluating the extent of her medical expenses and the income loss due to inability to work, the Forest Department sanctioned and disbursed the amount, marking it as one of the highest such payouts in recent memory for wildlife-related incidents.
The department reiterated its commitment to supporting victims of wildlife conflict while continuing efforts to manage human-animal interactions in vulnerable areas.
