MARGAO: In a bid to enhance sustainability and promote biodiversity, the Forest Department, alongside the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA), held a comprehensive review today focusing on the development of urban forests across municipal areas.
The initiative, aimed at improving green cover and creating serene public spaces, will begin with the Margao Municipal Council in its first phase.
Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating that the project would be taken forward on a “war footing.”
“The goal is to create tranquil spaces where people can unwind, while also increasing tree plantation to enrich the urban ecosystem,” said Rane.
The meeting outlined strategies to boost green cover and develop urban forests that would not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also serve as areas for community engagement.
These green spaces are expected to promote biodiversity and provide residents with much-needed areas of relaxation amid the bustling city environment.
As part of the strategy, stakeholders discussed various methods of increasing tree plantation efforts and engaging local communities to ensure the long-term success of urban forest projects.
By focusing on areas like Margao, the initiative hopes to establish a sustainable model that can be expanded across other municipalities in the future.
The initiative aligns with the state’s broader commitment to addressing climate change and enhancing the livability of urban areas.
Through collaborative efforts between government bodies and local communities, the project aims to transform municipal spaces into vibrant, green environments that contribute to the health and well-being of residents.
