BICHOLIM: Former MLA of Sanquelim, Naresh Sawal, announced the candidature of Meghshyam Raut as an independent candidate for the upcoming Latambarse Zilla Panchayat election, positioning him against the BJP.
Sawal, addressing a press conference in the presence of his workers and supporters, said that Raut enjoys “strong support from all five panchayats” in the constituency and will contest independently with the backing of their group.
Speculation over Raut’s political move had intensified last week after reports emerged that the Congress leader had quit the party and was likely to contest the 2025 Zilla Panchayat elections. Today’s announcement by Sawal has now confirmed Raut’s independent candidature.
Sawal emphasised that the group is united and committed to backing Raut in the upcoming polls, signalling a direct challenge to the BJP in the Latambarse ZP segment.
