MORMUGAO: In a significant political development, Fourteen councillors of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Thursday moved a no-confidence motion against deputy chairperson Ramchandra Kamat, triggering fresh political churn in the civic body.
The no-confidence motion was initiated through a written communication signed by as many as 14 councillors, including MMC chairperson Girish Borkar. The letter has been formally submitted to the Director of Municipal Administration with a request to convene a special council meeting to take up the motion.
The councillors who have signed the no-confidence letter are Girish Borkar, Amey Chopdekar, Shami Salkar, Deepak Naik, Yatin Kamurlekar, Matias Monteiro, Narayan Borkar, Fredrick Henriques, Devita Arolkar, Shraddha Mahale, Vinod Kinlekar, Sudesh Bhosle, Caterina Xavier and Shraddha Amonkar.
Notably, among the 14 signatories are two councillors who are spouses of sitting legislators from the Vasco and Mormugao constituencies. These include Shami Salkar and Shraddha Amonkar, a detail that adds political significance to the move within the Mormugao civic landscape.
In the no-confidence motion letter, the councillors have alleged that Ramchandra Kamat failed to take the council into confidence on key matters concerning the functioning of the municipality. The signatories stated that his style of functioning had eroded trust and coordination within the council, leading to dissatisfaction among a majority of elected members.
The letter clearly states that all 14 councillors have “lost faith” in the deputy chairperson, citing lack of consultation and collective decision-making as the primary reasons behind the motion.
With the submission of the letter to the Director of Municipal Administration, the councillors have sought the convening of a special meeting as per procedure, where the motion will be discussed and put to vote.
Political observers note that the development reflects internal discontent within the MMC and could have a bearing on the overall functioning and stability of the council in the coming weeks. The date for the special meeting is expected to be announced after due scrutiny of the motion by the municipal administration.
