CURCHOREM: A free dog sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination drive has begun in Curchorem as part of an initiative to promote humane and sustainable control of the street dog population.
The programme is being implemented by Worldwide Veterinary Service Goa and Mission Rabies in partnership with the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council and the Village Panchayats of Assolda and Xeldem. The drive will run from March 9 to April 4, 2026.
The initiative has been supported by Nilesh Cabral, who has been advocating for humane and long-term solutions to address the increasing street dog population in the Curchorem constituency.
A team of 25 trained professionals, including veterinarians, veterinary assistants, animal handlers and dog catchers, has been deployed for the programme. The camp is providing free sterilisation surgeries for street dogs, free sterilisation for local indie pet dogs, and free anti-rabies vaccinations.
Sterilisation, commonly known as Animal Birth Control (ABC) or spay-neuter, is a surgical procedure carried out on both male and female dogs to prevent reproduction and help stabilise the population of street animals. Experts consider mass sterilisation programmes to be one of the most effective and humane methods of controlling stray dog numbers.
Apart from population control, sterilisation also offers health benefits for animals. In female dogs, it helps prevent unwanted pregnancies and reduces the risk of breast and uterine cancers, while in male dogs it protects against testicular cancer and can reduce roaming, aggression and dog fights.
The camp is being held at the open ground opposite the GSUDA Market in Curchorem. Dogs aged six months and above are eligible for the programme.
Pet owners wishing to sterilise their local indie pet dogs can book appointments by contacting the organisers on 8999317342.
