CANACONA – A veteran freedom fighter from Canacona Shivanand alias Nanda Gaitonde (95) expired last night in Pune after a brief illness.
Gaitonde, known to organise Satyagraha, besides Portuguese regime resistance movement, has undergone nearly five years of rigorous imprisonment after he was arrested in 1954 and sentenced to 8 years of rigorous imprisonment. He was, however, released in May 1959.
Son of Dattatraya Pundalik Sinai Kakode, Shripad was born at Palolem in Canacona Taluka on 10th February 1927, and is highly educated with B.Sc Dip NFC, MIBF, MBIM National Foundry College in England and was an active member of NCG organised resistance movement and Satyagraha in 1953-54. He was imprisoned and sentenced to 8 years of Rigorous Imprisonment with two years Fine.
