The recent events surrounding the Agarwadekar family in Assagao have sent shockwaves through the state of Goa. What initially seemed like a straightforward case of house demolition has spiralled into a complex web of political involvement, public outrage, and conflicting statements from the family at the centre of the incident.
The sequence of events began with the alleged kidnapping of Pradeep Agarwadekar and his son, followed by the demolition of their house by Puja Sharma from Delhi. This triggered a political uproar, with prominent leaders such as Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo, and other Congress members stepping into the fray. Offering to rebuild the houses through crowdfunding and issuing ultimatums to the Chief Minister, the political drama quickly escalated.
Amidst the public outcry, a real estate agent from Dona Paula was arrested, and the Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, intervened, promising comprehensive action. However, the situation took an unexpected turn when the Agarwadekar family met with Goa Forward leader Vijai Sardesai in Panaji.
Soon after they expressed their desire to withdraw all cases and rejected offers to rebuild their house.
This sudden U-turn has left many bewildered, including the political figures who were advocating for justice on behalf of the family. Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo expressed shock over the family’s decision, calling for a thorough investigation and emphasizing the need to hold the perpetrators accountable. She affirmed that the case, now under the jurisdiction of the Crime Branch, must reach a logical conclusion, much to the anticipation of the entire state.
Lobo’s impassioned words underscore the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that justice must prevail. She highlighted the need for a clear message to be sent to those responsible, asserting that such infringements cannot be tolerated in a state as small as Goa. Her steadfast stance reflects the sentiment of many who are deeply troubled by the events that have unfolded and are demanding a resolution.
Against this backdrop, the government’s decision to form a Special Investigations Team (SIT) to probe the case marks a pivotal moment in the pursuit of truth and accountability. The SIT has a job cut out they need to unearth the truth right from kidnapping, demolition, political involvement and the final U-turn.
SIT needs to expose whether the family was threatened to withdraw the cases or what were the terms of compromise with the builder.
Anyways, neither the builder nor the broker should get away with such a heinous act and need to be punished, if guilty.
