New Delhi: Angad Bir Singh, 22, the rising star of Indian hockey, has captured the imagination of fans with his trademark move—the spectacular ‘double jalebi’ shootout trick. Representing the Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League (HIL), Angad stunned everyone during a nail-biting match against the Tamil Nadu Dragons by beating goalkeeper David Harte with an innovative and fearless shot that instantly went viral.
What looked like magic on the field was actually the result of relentless hard work and dedication. “I’ve trained a lot for this move,” Angad revealed. “During training sessions at the Indian camp, I keep practicing it regularly. When the HIL camp started, I focused even more because I knew shootout opportunities would increase. It’s humbling to see such a huge response—I never expected it to become so popular. This motivates me to keep practicing and improving.”
The ‘double jalebi’ wasn’t just a flashy trick; it was a well-honed skill built on instinct, rigorous drills, match experience, and nerves of steel. His consistent performance caught the attention of national coaches and earned him a place on the Indian senior team for the FIH Pro League. Training alongside international stars like Thierry Brinkman and Alexander Hendrickx, Angad impressed everyone, including Kalinga Lancers coach Valentin Altenburg, who praised the move as “sharp, fearless, and unique—a perfect blend of instinct and training under pressure.”
Reflecting on his journey, Angad shared his lifelong dream of representing India. “Every professional athlete dreams of playing for their country, and I was no different. The transition from junior to senior level hockey was challenging but exciting. The senior game involves more tactical play and greater pressure, unlike junior hockey which focuses on fundamentals,” he explained.
From childhood dreams to his current national spotlight, Angad has been learning from senior players like Harmanpreet Singh and Hardik Singh, constantly honing his skills. “I have played at the junior level, represented my state, competed in the HIL, debuted for India, and played in Nationals. All these experiences have boosted my confidence. My ultimate dream is to win an Olympic gold for India. With the World Cup next year and the Olympics after that, I am dedicating all my time to improving so I can contribute to that goal,” he said.
