New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday lauded the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) for its pivotal role during Operation Sindoor, noting its swift and strategic response amid heightened maritime sensitivity. Speaking at the ICG’s 50th Raising Day event, he said the force deployed assets in advance, enhanced surveillance along the western coast, and maintained high alert levels in coastal and creek areas.
“Operation Sindoor has reaffirmed the Coast Guard’s role as the frontline force in India’s layered maritime security system, demonstrating strong inter-service coordination,” Singh said. He also highlighted the ICG’s broader responsibilities, from countering terrorism, arms and human trafficking, drug smuggling, piracy, and illegal trade, to safeguarding against marine pollution.
Celebrating five decades of service, Singh described the ICG as an “important pillar” of India’s strategic apparatus. Raised on February 1, 1977, with just seven surface platforms, the Coast Guard has grown into a formidable force with 155 ships and 80 aircraft, protecting India’s expanding maritime interests.
The event at Bharat Mandapam also saw the release of a commemorative stamp. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Defence Secretary R K Singh, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani were among the dignitaries present.
Singh’s remarks underscored the ICG’s critical role in national security, ensuring vigilance across India’s vast maritime domain while contributing to regional stability and maritime law enforcement.
