The Directorate of Foods and Drugs Administration has informed that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has directed that in case of non-packaged /loose sweets, the container/tray holding sweets at the outlet for sale should mandatorily display the “Best before Date” of the product with effect from October 01, 2020 in public interest and to ensure food safety.
The FBO, in addition to this, may also display the “Date of Manufacturing” which shall be purely voluntary and non-binding.
The FBOs shall decide and display the “Best Before Date” of sweets depending upon the nature of the product and the local conditions . An indicative list of shell life of various types of sweets is given in the Guidance Note on Safety of Traditional Milk Products which is available on FSSAI website.
All FBOs dealing in sweets should comply with above directions and the Commissioners of Food Safety of all State/UTS shall ensure compliance to these directions.
