SANCOALE: A well located within the premises of Our Lady of Health Church at Shindole, Sancoale, was found contaminated with fuel on Monday, raising concern among residents and prompting a joint inspection by authorities.
The issue surfaced after parish priest Fr Kenneth Teles reported a persistent strong smell in the area over the past 15 days. The matter was brought to the attention of MLA Anton Vaz on Sunday, following which immediate steps were taken to assess the situation.
During the inspection, Vaz, along with police and officials from concerned departments, examined the site and called for a detailed inquiry to determine the exact source of contamination. He stressed that identifying how fuel seeped into the well was crucial to prevent potential risks to public health and the surrounding environment.
Locals were left shocked after drawing water from the well and informally testing it, during which the presence of fuel was confirmed when the water ignited. Residents expressed serious concern, stating that the contamination posed a potential hazard in the residential locality.
