CANACONA: Galgibaga Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (TRC), the headquarters of South Marine Range got its second pit with 116 eggs with the mother fflipper vising the shore as early as 4.30 am on Friday. The olive ridley eggs wee immediately shifted and protected as pit no.2 at the Nesting Site. Agonda TRC who opened its account with 65 eggs at its pit no.1 on 28th December, now has a total o 10 Pits at Nesting site which is incidentally brought back to its original site at Divanbhag.
Last year turtle nesting season forest department were encountered with lots of resentments from the locals when the forest department suddenly erected a Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at the back side Agonda church premises, after initialy placing that seasons first lot of olive redley eggs at the traditional site(Divanbhag) Forest department through its South Marine Range began to place the eggs in pits converting turtle nesting site next to the newly erected TRC. The authorities faced with stiff objections for the move, conducted a few inspections on public demand and had agreed to re-shift the turtle nesting site back to its original site for the next season at Divanbhag and accordingly the current seasons first pit containing 65 eggs, and the subsequent pits, pit no. 2 with 107 eggs and pit no. 3 with 67 eggs laid on 29th Dec and 9th Jan, respectively were also housed at the traditional turtle nesting site at Divanbhag. Presently, Agonda TRC protects 10 Pits containing 962 olive ridley eggs all secured at the traditional Turtle Nesting site at Divanbhag of Agonda TRC.
With the second turtle visiting Galgibaga shore, Galgibaga Turtle Nesting Site protects 229 eggs.
