New Delhi: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has called on his players to dig deep and give one last push as they gear up for the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval, starting Thursday. With England leading the series 2-1, India have a chance to square things and avoid a series defeat.
Speaking at a diaspora reception hosted by the High Commission of India in London on Monday, Gambhir acknowledged the historical significance and intensity of an India-England tour, calling it both “challenging and exciting.”
“Touring this part of the world has always been exciting and challenging because of the history between the two countries, which can never be forgotten,” said Gambhir. “We have cherished every bit of support we’ve received every time we’ve toured the UK.”
India kept their hopes alive with a gritty draw in Manchester, ensuring England couldn’t seal the series with a match to spare. Despite losses at Lord’s and Leeds, the visitors have shown flashes of brilliance and resilience, making for a thrilling series overall.
Reflecting on the tour, Gambhir said, “The last five weeks have been really exciting for both countries. The kind of cricket on display has made every cricket lover proud. Both teams threw punches and fought for every inch.”
With the series on the line, Gambhir issued a passionate message to his squad: “We have one more week to go. One final push to make. One final opportunity to make our country proud. Jai Hind.”
India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, also praised the team, stating their performance embodied the fighting spirit of a “new India.”
“It’s been a great series, played in the best spirit. The team has shown the range of skills and fighting spirit now associated with Team India — a perfect reflection of the resilience of a rising India,” Doraiswami said.
All eyes will now be on The Oval, where Team India will look to draw the series and end the England tour on a high.
