Vasco: A gas laying pipeline contractor on Friday while laying a gas pipeline , damaged a culvert that connects Sancoale industrial estate, residential areas and an old petrol pump .
The incident caused concerns to many residents, who then approached the local panch Arish Kadar. Kadar, however, informed about the incident to Sarpanch Girish Pillai who immediately arrived on the site along with Panchayat secretary and carried out an inspection of the works.
Pillai later speaking to reporters said that while the panchayat was pro development, such errors carried out by contactors could prove dangerous
‘This is the people’s issue and they are upset with the incident. The culvert is broken and the connection between Sancoale industrial estate and residential area seems to be cut off,” he said.
He said the people fear that there are many heavy vehicles that move along the route on the culvert which is damaged at the base by the contractor.
“The culvert is damaged and weak and can collapse if a heavy vehicle like trucks etc continue to move on it regularly. In such a case, heavy vehicles can topple on the nearby houses and kill people as well. As a sarpanch I have shot letters to relevant departments and the people have also demanded that the contractor now build the culvert with RCC again for the safety of the people,” said Pillai.
