Panaji: The Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) has formally requested the North Goa district administration to defer the proposed road closure on the Porvorim–Mapusa stretch till January 5, 2026, citing peak tourist inflow and the likelihood of severe traffic congestion during the New Year period.
In a letter dated December 30, 2025, addressed to North Goa Collector and District Magistrate Ankit Yadav, IAS, GCCI acknowledged the proactive steps taken by the district administration to ensure public safety and expedite completion of the ongoing flyover work between Porvorim and Guirim.
While expressing support for the timely execution of critical infrastructure projects, the chamber highlighted that Goa is currently witnessing peak tourist movement until the first week of January, with January 2 falling on a Friday, resulting in an extended weekend rush. GCCI pointed out that the Porvorim–Mapusa road serves as a vital arterial route used extensively for travel to and from Mopa International Airport, access to North Goa’s tourism destinations, connectivity to Thivim Railway Station, and movement towards Maharashtra and Belagavi.
The chamber cautioned that any closure during this high-traffic period could lead to severe congestion, inconvenience to both tourists and local residents, and could adversely affect Goa’s tourism image during the peak season.
In its appeal, GCCI proposed that the road closure be briefly deferred for three days, from January 2 to January 5, 2026, after which the work could proceed as planned, stating that this would help ease peak tourist movement while still allowing authorities to execute the project efficiently and safely.
The letter also assured the administration of GCCI’s full cooperation and support in initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and public safety in the state.
