Panaji: In a major relief for the Goa Engineering College (GEC), 35 contract faculty members have been asked to resume duty from August 13, following a month-long standoff that had left students without teachers and faculty members in a state of deep uncertainty.
The professors, all highly qualified, had been pressing for salary hikes and automatic contract renewals — assurances they claim were repeatedly promised by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant during three separate meetings, but not acted upon.
The deadlock finally broke after Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai raised the matter in the Goa Assembly on August 6, drawing attention to the disruption in academics and the plight of the educators.
On August 12, the government called all 35 professors, instructing them to rejoin, with an assurance that their demands would be addressed. Faculty members have hailed the development as a “hard-fought victory” for both education and the state.
“This is the result of our united stand and the strong political will shown in the Assembly. We hope the government keeps its word on improving our service conditions,” said one of the reinstated professors.
