New Delhi: A religious trip to Nepal turned tragic for a Ghaziabad family when Rajesh Devi Gola, 55, died attempting to escape a hotel fire set by rioters in Kathmandu on September 9, 2025. She had traveled with her husband, Ramveer Singh Gola, 58, to visit the Pashupatinath temple.
On the night of the incident, violent protests erupted in Kathmandu, led by Gen Z activists demanding government transparency and the lifting of a social media ban. Protesters stormed various establishments, including the Hilton Hotel, setting them ablaze. The Golas were staying at the Hilton when the fire broke out.
In a desperate bid to escape, Ramveer Singh Gola broke a window, tied sheets together, and attempted to descend to safety. While he managed to escape with minor injuries, Rajesh Devi Gola slipped and fell while trying to climb down, sustaining critical injuries. She was rushed to a Kathmandu hospital but succumbed to her injuries on the night of September 10.
The couple’s son, Vishal, expressed frustration over the lack of communication and support. “For two days, we didn’t know about their whereabouts. Finally, my father was found in a relief camp, but my mother died in the hospital,” he said. He also alleged minimal assistance from the Indian embassy during the ordeal.
Rajesh Devi Gola’s body was brought back to India via the Sonauli border in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district and arrived in Ghaziabad on Thursday. The last rites are scheduled for Friday.
The Indian government has expressed condolences and is providing support to the grieving family. The incident highlights the escalating tensions in Nepal and the risks faced by foreign nationals amid civil unrest.
