PANAJI: The Goa Handicrafts, Rural and Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (GHRSSIDC) has intensified its campaign to curb the sale and use of Plaster of Paris (PoP) Ganesh idols ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, with dedicated teams deployed to monitor markets across the State.
Managing Director Damodar Morajkar said that enforcement squads are conducting checks to ensure that PoP idols, which are banned due to their environmental hazards, do not reach consumers.
“Teams have been deployed to check PoP idols, while clay idol makers are being supported with ₹200 per idol. Eco-friendly Ganesh idols are also available at the Panjim centre,” Morajkar informed.
The Corporation has been promoting traditional artisans who craft idols from clay, considered eco-friendly as they dissolve naturally in water bodies without causing pollution. The financial support is aimed at boosting local craftsmanship and discouraging PoP idol imports from neighbouring states, which often flood Goa’s market during the festive season.
Over the past few years, Goa has taken a firm stance against PoP idols, citing their contribution to water pollution and harm to aquatic life during immersion rituals.
The State government, through GHRSSIDC, has consistently pushed for a shift towards sustainable practices by setting up sales centres, offering subsidies, and creating awareness among devotees.
