PANAJI: The Goa government has started the process of obtaining a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for urrak, a drink made from cashew apple juice, in an effort to improve the standing of cashew distillates.
This action comes after Cashew Feni’s prior success in obtaining GI certification.
The Goa Forest Development Corporation Chairperson and Poriem MLA, Deviya Rane, emphasized the need to change people’s perceptions of cashew-based spirits. “Cashews shouldn’t be associated with country liquor or as a drink for the underprivileged,” said Dr Deviya
She further said that they ought to be acknowledged as high-end alcoholic beverages comparable to the best in the world. Feni and Urrak both need to get to that level,” said Rane.
Rane went on to emphasize how crucial it is to acquire a GI tag for Urrak. “The application process for a GI tag for Urrak has begun after we submitted a proposal. After approval, urea which is only made in Goa using real Goan cashews to ensure purity and quality will be sold in bottles.
“All that is currently coming into Goa is a mixture; no other state will be allowed to market their product as rural,” stated Rane.
