New Delhi: In the inaugural match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, held in Dubai on Thursday, India secured a convincing six-wicket victory over Bangladesh, thanks to stellar performances from Shubman Gill and Mohammed Shami. The win marked a strong start to India’s campaign in the tournament.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma was effusive in his praise for Gill, who scored an unbeaten century, and Shami, who claimed a five-wicket haul. “Gill has been in brilliant form lately, and his performance today was no surprise,” Rohit said during the post-match presentation. “He stayed till the end to ensure the win, which is a testament to his class and composure under pressure.”
Gill’s century was instrumental in guiding India to victory, especially after the team faced some early wickets. His partnership with KL Rahul, who scored 41*, was crucial in stabilizing the innings and securing the win. Rohit highlighted the experience and calmness of his team, particularly Gill and Rahul, in handling pressure situations.
Rohit also lauded Shami’s performance, noting his significant contribution to the team. “Shami’s five-wicket haul was outstanding. He has been waiting for this moment for a long time, and we know what he brings to the team. His match-winning ability is invaluable,” Rohit emphasized.
The match saw Bangladesh win the toss and elect to bat, but they were reduced to 35/5 in the first nine overs. A resilient partnership between Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy helped Bangladesh reach 228 in 49.4 overs. India’s bowling attack, led by Shami and supported by Harshit Rana and Axar Patel, was pivotal in restricting Bangladesh’s score.
In the run-chase, India started strongly with a 69-run opening stand between Rohit and Gill. Despite some quick wickets, Gill’s unbeaten 101 and Rahul’s 41* ensured India’s victory. Rohit acknowledged a dropped catch that denied Axar Patel a hat-trick but praised the opposition for their resistance.
Looking ahead, India will face arch-rivals Pakistan in their next group-stage match, a encounter that promises high stakes and intense competition.
