New Delhi: The return of Shubman Gill as India’s new T20I vice-captain has created a selection dilemma for the team management, with either Sanju Samson or Abhishek Sharma likely to make way.
Gill, who had a standout IPL 2025 season as the second-highest run-scorer, is expected to reclaim his position at the top of the order. His promotion to vice-captaincy signals a long-term leadership role, as he is already India’s ODI deputy and recently impressed while leading the Test side in England.
India’s opening pair against England earlier this year was Samson and Abhishek. While Abhishek excelled and climbed to the top of the ICC T20I batting rankings, Samson managed just 51 runs in five innings, despite his earlier series form where he struck three centuries.
With middle-order options like Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Jitesh Sharma also in contention, the management faces a tough call to balance the XI. One among Samson or Abhishek may have to step aside to accommodate Gill at the top.
