MARGAO: In the event that the Goa Legislative Assembly does not adopt a resolution giving the Roman script equal standing under the Official Language Act, the Global Konknni Forum (GKF) declared on Monday that they would take legal action.
Prof. Antonio Alvares, the recently elected president, said at a press conference in Margao that the Forum had nothing against the members that broke away from the association and started a new organization. “Getting justice for the Roman script is our top priority, and we will keep working toward that goal until it is accomplished,” he underlined.
According to Alvares, the Forum has been pursuing this cause for more than two years, and much more needs to be done.
He added that if the members of the Legislative Assembly failed to adopt a resolution addressing the demand for equal recognition of the Roman script, the Forum was ready to file a lawsuit. In response to a query from a reporter, Alvares stated that discrimination on the basis of script is prohibited by the Indian Constitution.
In response to inquiries concerning the recent division among its members, the Forum said that some had departed to start their own organization. The Forum, however, voiced no worries about this division.
The Global Konknni Forum’s secretary, Jose Salvador Fernandes, provided more details on the Forum’s history. He clarified that Domnic Fernandes spearheaded efforts to unite individuals who were fervent about advancing Konknni in the Roman script and redressing the wrong done to the script in the Official Language Act, which laid the foundation for the Forum two years ago. In May 2024, following a great deal of preparation, the Forum was formally established.
“To create the Forum and get here, our members put in a lot of effort over the last six months,” Fernandes stated.
Prior to this, the founding members of the Global Konknni Forum unanimously chose Francis Xavier Fernandes as vice president and Antonio Alvares as president.
The purpose of the conference was to choose a committee for the 2025–2027 timeframe.
