New Delhi: The Global Chess League (GCL), a franchise-based chess tournament known for merging tradition with innovation, is set to make its Indian debut with a grand homecoming edition in Mumbai. Supported by industrialist Anand Mahindra, the league aims to bring the strategic depth of chess together with modern entertainment and technology.
Having previously staged successful events in the UAE and the United Kingdom, GCL is now bringing its hybrid format to India, the spiritual home of the game. Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi highlighted Mahindra’s long-standing interest in chess, noting that his backing adds prestige and momentum to the league’s efforts to promote chess culture nationally.
Gourav Rakshith, GCL commissioner, emphasised the league’s mission to engage new audiences while maintaining the integrity of competitive chess. He noted India’s rising prominence in global chess, fueled by a surge of talented players, growing fan interest, and strong sponsor support. “Chess is a lifelong game and our cross-generational teams reflect that inclusivity. We aim to convert casual viewers into passionate fans while delivering top-tier competition,” Rakshith explained.
The Mumbai edition will feature a mix of international stars and Indian prodigies, including Viswanathan Anand, Fabiano Caruana, Alireza Firouzja, Hikaru Nakamura, Gukesh, Pragg, and Arjun Erigaisi. The league’s teams include male, female, and prodigy players, fostering mentorship and collaborative strategies uncommon in traditional individual tournaments.
Alongside competitive matches, GCL will host a festival-style “Chess-tivle,” offering interactive experiences for families, enthusiasts, and newcomers. Technology will play a central role, with innovations like virtual stadium walkthroughs, fantasy leagues, and live-studio experiences designed to enhance engagement and bring the in-person atmosphere to remote audiences.
Rakshith also highlighted the influence of AI on chess, noting that machine learning is unlocking new strategies and insights, making the game more accessible and exciting. The league’s rapid chess format, combined with these technological enhancements, allows classical and modern elements of the game to enrich one another, keeping both traditionalists and new fans engaged.
By integrating high-level competition, cutting-edge technology, and entertainment, the GCL aims to redefine how chess is experienced globally while celebrating its roots in India. This Mumbai edition promises a dynamic blend of strategy, spectacle, and innovation, making it a landmark event for the sport.
