PANAJI: Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) is preparing to add heart and lung transplants to its list of advanced medical procedures, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane announced on Monday.
Currently equipped to perform kidney and liver transplants, GMC will expand its capabilities through collaborations with specialized hospitals, the minister stated in a social media post.
“We are enhancing our medical infrastructure to support life-saving procedures and expand organ transplant services,” Rane said.
Since the launch of the State Organ Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) in Goa, GMC has successfully facilitated eight organ donations, providing renewed hope and life to 29 patients. The first organ donation under this initiative took place in December 2020.
Highlighting the importance of organ donation, Rane noted that one donor can save up to eight lives, while a tissue donor can help up to 75 people. He expressed gratitude to the families of donors, emphasizing that each transplant represents a triumph of compassion and medical collaboration.
“From kidneys to hearts, every transplant tells a story of hope, teamwork, and generosity,” he said.
Rane added that the state is focusing on creating a responsive and patient-focused healthcare system, with improved protocols for brain death certification, timely organ retrieval, and increased public awareness around organ donation.
