Porvorim: A delegation from the Goa Maritime Officers Association (GMOA) met Ports Minister and Captain of Ports Digambar Kamat at the Goa Assembly Complex in Porvorim on Wednesday to discuss key issues concerning the development of the maritime sector and the welfare of seafarers in the state.
During the meeting, the delegation briefed the minister on the association’s objectives and initiatives aimed at strengthening unity and professional growth among maritime officers. The members also invited Kamat to visit the GMOA office in Comba, Margao.
The association submitted a memorandum highlighting two major demands. The first was the establishment of a full-fledged Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) office in Vasco. According to GMOA, the absence of such a facility in Goa forces maritime officers and seafarers to travel outside the state for essential services such as certification, issuance of Continuous Discharge Certificates (CDC), Dangerous Cargo Endorsements (DCE), and maritime examinations.
The second demand was for the creation of a Goa Maritime Bhavan and Maritime Convention Centre in Salcette. The association proposed that the facility serve as a central hub for maritime activities, training programmes, professional development sessions, and industry engagements, thereby strengthening Goa’s position as a key maritime hub.
Digambar Kamat acknowledged the proactive efforts of the association and appreciated its role in representing the concerns of the maritime fraternity. He assured the delegation of the government’s support and reiterated his commitment to working collaboratively on initiatives that benefit maritime professionals in Goa.
