New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday strongly criticized Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah for his derogatory remarks against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a decorated officer from the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals. The court emphasized that individuals holding constitutional posts must act with responsibility and restraint, particularly during sensitive times for the nation.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India expressed its disapproval, stating, “We expect a minister to be responsible,” as it addressed the minister’s alleged communal and sexist comments. The court underscored the need for public figures to uphold dignity in their speech, especially when referring to serving members of the armed forces.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a trailblazer in the Indian Army, has been subjected to what the Madhya Pradesh High Court termed “scurrilous language” by the minister. The High Court had earlier directed the registration of an FIR against Shah for his remarks.
The apex court echoed the High Court’s concern and suggested that Shah issue a public apology, reinforcing the principle that political leaders must be held to higher standards of conduct.
