PANAJI: The drug menace in Goa has been increasing. Goa police registered 762 drug cases from 2020 to February 28, 2025. Police have also arrested 76 people of which 137 are foreigners, 505 non Goans, and 253 Goans from 2020 till Febryary 28, 2025.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant informed that Goa being a Tourist destination, narcotic drugs are smuggled in Goa for consumption and transit.
“The team of District Police, Crime Branch and ANC PS are always in the field throughout the state who are conducting raid after receiving specific information and cases are booked as per the provision of NDPS Act 1985,” said Sawant
He further said that After the final disposal of the case, the Court passes an order for destruction of drugs. The drugs to be disposed and the necessary documents related to the case is place before Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Disposal Committee (NDPSDC). The committee verifies the records and takes the decision for the disposal of drugs.
“The drugs are then disposed with the help of incinerator of GMC Bambolim in the presence of two respectable persons and committee members,” said Sawant
For creating awareness among public, CM said that 26th June is observed as International Anti-Drug Day. Posters/banners are displayed at prominent places at the beaches, bus stands and railway stations in order to create awareness about the harmful effects of drugs and stringent provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
He informed that Goa police has taken pro-active steps i.e Day and night Police patrolling is maintained by the staff of Police Stations in their respective P.S. jurisdiction and collecting intelligence in this regard .
Integrated Nakabandi has been devised at specific points and the Police officers and men of the districts and units are deployed for checking.
The bar/restaurants and shacks along in coastal area are subjected to surprise checks. Patrolling is maintained through beat staff, PCR vehicles, motor cycles at the places having high foot fall of tourists to keep watch
The Goa Police has been endeavoring to educate youth, student and general public regarding “Ill effect of drugs and to keep them away from drug addiction and drug trade.
