PANAJI: Goa has achieved 100% literacy, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Tuesday.
The formal declaration will be made on May 30, coinciding with the Statehood Day celebrations.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said the state’s achievement marks a historic milestone in its socio-educational development.
“Goa has now become a fully literate state. The official announcement will be made on Statehood Day,” Sawant said.
He credited the success to the concerted efforts of the state’s education department, non-governmental organizations, and community-based initiatives, particularly the ‘Goa State Literacy Mission Authority’.
The Mission, under the aegis of the Directorate of Literacy and Continuing Education, played a key role in reaching out to adult learners and school dropouts.
“Achieving 100% literacy is not just a statistical accomplishment; it reflects the commitment of our people and the government to inclusive development,” the Chief Minister added.
Goa, which attained statehood on May 30, 1987, has consistently ranked among the top states in India in terms of literacy rates. As per the 2011 Census, the state had a literacy rate of 88.7%.
The final push toward full literacy was achieved through sustained awareness drives and targeted learning programs in recent years.
The declaration is expected to be one of the highlights of the Statehood Day event, which will be marked by a public function and cultural performances in Panaji.
