PANAJI: Goa has remained in the grip of intense monsoon showers, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for June 14 to 16, followed by a yellow alert for the next three days.
Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall was reported across the State, with some areas experiencing very heavy to extremely heavy downpours. As per IMD data for the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on June 13, Ponda topped the rainfall chart with 8.6 inches, while Dharbandora received 6.6 inches, Sanguem 5.6 inches, and Canacona 5.5 inches. Other rainfall figures included Quepem (3.9 inches), Mapusa (3.8 inches), Panjim and Pernem (3.5 inches each), Old Goa and Dabolim (3.3 inches each), Mormugao (2.2 inches), and Sanquelim (1.4 inches).
According to an IMD official, both North and South Goa districts are likely to witness very heavy rainfall at isolated locations and heavy rainfall at several places from June 14 to 16.
Rainfall is also expected to continue in isolated areas on June 17, 18, and 19.
An orange alert is a warning to remain prepared for severe weather that may lead to disruptions, while a yellow alert signals the need for caution due to potential heavy rainfall.
Authorities have urged residents to stay alert, especially in flood-prone and low-lying areas, as the monsoon intensifies across the coastal state.
