PANAJI: Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Goa were overshadowed by relentless rains as the state crossed the symbolic 100-inch rainfall mark this monsoon.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) registered 75.9 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending Thursday morning, ranking among the heaviest downpours of the season.
This year, the milestone was reached in 95 days, much later than in 2024, when it was achieved by late July. Meteorologists attributed the latest surge to a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above sea level, which is expected to drift towards Odisha in the coming days.
The IMD has placed Goa under an orange alert, forecasting moderate to heavy showers with strong winds reaching 30–50 km/h over the next 48 hours. Officials have cautioned about possible waterlogging, damage to standing crops, and travel disruptions, even as the downpour has replenished reservoirs and eased concerns over water storage.
Rainfall from June 1 to August 27 has totaled 2,609.2 mm, nearly matching the season’s normal of 2,613.9 mm. South Goa has recorded a surplus of 4%, while North Goa has reported a slight deficit of nearly 5%.
Among talukas, Quepem reported the highest rainfall on Wednesday with 130 mm, followed by Canacona (102.2 mm), Sankhali (99.4 mm), Dharbandora (98.2 mm), Ponda (85 mm), Old Goa (83 mm) and Pernem (79 mm). Lighter showers were reported in Panaji (39.6 mm) and Mormugao (29.2 mm).
