The Church in Goa has expressed strong anguish over a recent social media advertisement that it says wrongfully links the sacred celebration of Christmas with explicit and unrelated themes. Church authorities described the content as deeply offensive to Christian sentiments and a distortion of a festival rooted in joy, peace, and the birth of Jesus Christ.
In a statement, the Church said such portrayals disrespect the beliefs of an entire community and undermine the values of mutual respect in a diverse society. It called on the creators and promoters of the advertisement to withdraw it immediately and reflect on the hurt caused. The Church also urged authorities to conduct necessary enquiries into the matter.
The statement reminded that while freedom of expression is a protected right, it carries a responsibility to respect the sacred convictions of others. It appealed to Catholics to avoid associating with events that do not uphold the values of their faith and called on people of goodwill to promote understanding and harmony during the Christmas season.
