MARGAO: In a significant announcement for Goa’s maritime community, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Wednesday declared that the Seafarers Pension Scheme will be made permanent for all Goan seafarers. Speaking at the Seafarers Day celebration organized by the Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) in Margao, the Chief Minister further assured that if the current government is re-elected in 2027, an additional ₹1,000 will be added to the pension amount, raising it to ₹3,500 per month.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to the welfare of seafarers, Dr. Sawant said, “We recognize the sacrifices and contributions of our Goan seafarers. This scheme is a token of our gratitude and a step towards ensuring their financial security.” He also promised support for seafarers and their families during emergencies and other times of need.
The event saw the felicitation of former Chief Minister Churchill Alemao, himself a former seaman, for his contributions both at sea and in public life. Several seafarers who have completed 25 years of service were also honoured by both Dr. Sawant and Alemao.
The theme of this year’s Seafarers Day was “My Ship, No Harassment,” with a strong call from GSAI President for a harassment-free work environment for Indian seafarers. The Chief Minister assured the gathering that their concerns would be addressed through appropriate channels and policy-level support.
Former MP Narendra Sawaikar also addressed the gathering, applauding the resilience of Goan seafarers and their role in supporting the state’s economy.
The event drew participation from hundreds of seafarers, their families, and well-wishers from across the state.
