Calangute: In a bid to address the escalating crime rates in Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has emphasized the need for stricter tenant verification processes. This move comes as the state grapples with an influx of outsiders, which has been linked to a surge in violent crimes such as rapes and murders.
Sawant highlighted that the influx of workers from other states brings a different behavioral dynamic, often leading to violent confrontations.
He noted that Goans, known for their peaceful nature, are increasingly concerned about the impact of these crimes on the state’s reputation as a major tourist destination.
Sawant underscored the importance of using technology to modernize the taxi sector, which is crucial for competing with other international travel destinations. He also stressed that the government is actively collecting data on out-of-state workers through tenant verification to ensure that law and order are maintained. Shack owners were warned against taking the law into their own hands, as such actions could deter tourists from visiting Goa.
Michael Lobo, MLA for Calangute, encouraged citizens to take responsibility for addressing local issues rather than solely relying on the government.
He also advocated for granting urban status to income-generating panchayats like Calangute, Candolim, and Anjuna, emphasizing that this would not lead to the loss of panchayat systems but rather provide locals with more amenities.
