PORVORIM: The Government of Goa has reiterated its firm commitment to combating drug abuse, terming it a serious threat to society and particularly to the youth, during the 30-day Special Awareness Campaign on “Drug Abuse – Drugs: A Menace to Society” organised by the Goa State Legal Services Authority (GSLSA) under the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
The campaign event was held at the Bombay High Court of Goa in the presence of the Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, along with judges of the High Court, senior officials and dignitaries.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant stated that drug abuse destroys lives, families and society at large, and poses a grave danger to young people, who are the strength of Goa. He asserted that the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs and has significantly strengthened anti-drug laws, intensified surveillance and cracked down on drug dealers and trafficking networks.
The Chief Minister further highlighted improved coordination with central agencies, adoption of modern technology in enforcement and strict action against offenders. He stressed that awareness campaigns, particularly at the school level, play a crucial role in preventing drug abuse before it takes root.
The government also lauded the efforts of GSLSA for conducting extensive school-level awareness programmes and placing emphasis on rehabilitation alongside enforcement. With the release of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as part of the campaign, authorities underlined the importance of a structured and coordinated approach in tackling drug-related issues.
The campaign aligns with the national Nasha-Mukt Bharat vision, reinforcing the message that the fight against drugs is a shared responsibility of the government, institutions and society.
The event underscored Goa’s resolve to ensure that drugs do not destroy its social fabric, while combining strict enforcement with awareness, legal support and rehabilitation initiatives.
