Panaji:Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has welcomed the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to launch the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 States and Union Territories, including Goa, calling it an important step toward ensuring free and fair elections.
In a statement issued on Monday, Sawant said, “We welcome the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls across 12 States and Union Territories, including Goa. A clean and transparent voter list is the bedrock of democracy. We have always stood for accurate, up-to-date rolls that include only genuine, eligible voters.”
He further added that the exercise would “help identify and correct discrepancies, remove ineligible entries — including names of illegal voters or illegal immigrants — and strengthen the integrity of the electoral process.”
The month-long SIR, announced by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, will be conducted from November 4 to December 4. In Goa, the State Election Commission (SEC) will adopt the Goa Legislative Assembly’s electoral roll as of January 1, 2025, for the upcoming Zilla Panchayat elections scheduled on December 13.
The Chief Minister said his government supports every effort by the ECI to enhance electoral transparency and accuracy. “Democracy begins with a trustworthy voters’ list. Goa remains committed to assisting the Election Commission in maintaining the purity of the electoral process,” he said.
