PANAJI: The Goa Congress on Tuesday alleged large-scale irregularities in the State’s electoral roll, claiming that several entries list the house number as “0” and that dozens of voters from different religions and castes are registered under a single address.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Patkar said the discrepancies in South Goa mirror those recently exposed by party national leader Rahul Gandhi in Bengaluru. “We have found as many as 80 voters registered under one house number. This is a serious issue that questions the accuracy and authenticity of voter records. We are investigating and will expose the matter soon,” Patkar told reporters.
The allegations were made during a Congress march to the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office in Altinho, Panaji, to submit a memorandum on the issue. The march, held in solidarity with AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and INDIA bloc MPs detained in Delhi on Monday, was stopped by police near Azad Maidan.
Police detained the delegation of Congress leaders and office-bearers led by Patkar while they were en route to the CEO’s office. The protest also accused the BJP of bias in the electoral roll revision process, terming the alleged manipulation as “vote chori” (vote theft).
