PANAJI: In a bid to tackle hoarding and ensure public safety, Goa authorities have banned the sale of petrol and diesel in loose quantities at fuel stations. District Collectors on Friday directed that fuel be dispensed strictly into vehicle tanks, prohibiting filling in cans, bottles, or any containers brought by customers.
Petrol pump dealers across the state have been instructed to adhere to the order and follow all prescribed safety norms. Officials cautioned that any breach would invite stringent action under various laws, including the Essential Commodities Act, the Petroleum Act and Rules, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Penalties may include prosecution as well as suspension or cancellation of licences.
To ensure compliance, Superintendents of Police, local police stations, and Sub-Divisional Magistrates have been tasked with carrying out surprise inspections. The move follows reports that some outlets were selling fuel in containers—raising concerns over fire hazards, illegal storage, and possible misuse.
At the same time, long queues at petrol pumps, particularly in Mapusa and nearby areas, have been linked to panic buying. Consumer forum GOACAN blamed the situation on misleading messages circulating on social media.
GOACAN convenor Roland Martins said false WhatsApp forwards have created unnecessary alarm among the public, leading to a surge in fuel demand. He reiterated that there is no shortage, noting that the central government has already clarified the situation.
Martins urged citizens to remain calm and avoid acting on unverified information, emphasizing the need to rely only on official sources to prevent further panic.
