PANAJI: The Goa government has announced the enforcement of its annual fishing ban along the state’s coastline and territorial waters, effective from June 1 to July 31, 2025, in a bid to protect marine biodiversity and ensure sustainable fishing practices.
As per a notification issued by the Directorate of Fisheries, the ban applies to all fishing operations involving mechanically propelled vessels as well as the use of trawl nets and purse seine nets.
The restrictions are imposed under the Goa Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1980, which mandates a seasonal halt to certain types of fishing during the monsoon to allow fish stocks to replenish.
However, an exemption has been made for registered motorised canoes fitted with inboard or outboard engines up to 10 horsepower, provided these vessels use gill nets exclusively for fishing.
“The Government of Goa, having regard to the need to conserve fish, hereby prohibits fishing by vessels fitted with mechanical propulsion and using trawl or purse-seine nets, except for registered canoes with 10 HP motors using gill nets,” stated Director of Fisheries, Yashasvini B.
The department has urged fishing communities to comply with the regulations, emphasizing that the seasonal ban is crucial for the long-term sustainability of marine life in Goan waters. Strict action will be taken against those found violating the ban.
