PANAJI: Director General of Police (DGP) Goa, Alok Kumar, on Monday stated that the police department has not yet received any directions from the state government regarding the Shirgao Stampede fact-finding committee report.
“We have not received any instructions from the Goa government as of now; we are awaiting further instructions,” he said.
The fact-finding committee, constituted to probe the tragic stampede during the annual Lairai Jatra at Shirgao in Bicholim taluka, had submitted its report to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recently.
The incident, which took place in early May, resulted in multiple injuries and raised serious concerns about crowd management and safety arrangements during large religious gatherings.
Speaking on a separate issue concerning road safety, the DGP emphasized the importance of inculcating responsible road behavior from a young age.
“If you are riding or driving vehicles on the road, you have to be a responsible road user. So it’s important that this learning begins at the school level,” Kumar said.
He added that a significant number of fatal accidents occur due to not wearing helmets and instances of drinking and driving.
