PANAJI: Following allegations of being in connivance with the builder lobby in the Assagao house demolition case, the Goa Director General of Police (DGP) Jaspal Singh is likely to be transferred from the state. The transfer order is expected anytime today.
As per sources, the state government has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) requesting transfer of DGP Singh who is the centre of controversy in the Assagao case after his own junior subordinate alleged the entire incident took place at the behest of DGP’s order.
The state government has also asked IGP Omvir Singh IPS to cut short his leave and join back to duty in few days.
All political parties in the state have called for prompt action against the accused, and the Congress has even called for the DGP to be removed, as the case has sparked a political debate.
Reporters were informed by Rahul Gupta, SP Crime, Goa Police, that an officer had claimed that seniors had a part in this procedure. All I want to draw attention to is that it is an anonymous, unsigned document.
“I was also given this document. It is far too soon to make any inferences from that document at this point. Nevertheless, we are looking into this and will let you know if anything significant comes to light,” he said
Due to a property dispute, some people are accused of illegally demolishing a portion of the one-story home owned by the Agarwadekar family in Assagao on June 22. A member of the impacted family named Prinsha Agarwadekar claimed that despite her own visits to the police to ask for assistance while the demolition was taking place, they were hesitant to take any action.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant paid a visit to the impacted family and issued an order for a high-level investigation into the event. In addition, he gave the family the assurance that the government would rebuild their home and get payment from the people who demolished it.
The chief of the Anjuna police station, Prashal Naik Dessai, was one of the three officers suspended by the state government.
Gupta informed reporters that the police had taken eight people into custody so far in this case.
He said that Anjuna Police had detained two people who were at the site when the demolition was taking place before the case was given to the crime branch’s four-person special investigation team.
Eight people have been detained in relation to the case since the crime branch took over the investigation and arrested six more suspects. Bouncers made up five of the six people the crime branch arrested. We have expanded the investigation to include several sections that address trespassing and assault,” Gupta stated.
The Goa Congress, meanwhile, has demanded that Sawant ask Union Home Minister Amit Shah to sack the DGP for his alleged involvement in the demolition.
“How can we expect Police Department to function in free & fair manner when the Super Boss himself pressurises his subordinates? Law & Order at all time low,” Amit Patkar, Goa Congress president
