PANAJI: Panaji police have registered an unnatural death case after a 42-year-old professional diver from Aldona died while carrying out underwater cleaning work on a casino vessel.
The deceased, identified as Clarence Anthony D’Souza, son of Celestino S. A. D’Souza, a resident of Saddo, Aldona, was engaged in cleaning operations for the vessel Deltin Jack on Monday night.
According to police, D’Souza, an experienced private diver, entered the water after completing all safety checks and formalities. He remained in periodic contact with the surface assistant through a safety rope, responding to signals at regular intervals.
Police said that after four successful responses, the diver failed to react to the fifth safety signal.
He was immediately pulled up to the surface by his assistant, where he was found unconscious. Despite being administered CPR onboard, D’Souza did not regain consciousness.
He was first rushed to a clinic at Campal and later to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police have registered the case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Investigations are being conducted by PSI Saheen Shetye of Panjim Police Station.
