Panaji: Former Australia all rounder Shane Watson has described Goa as a place that feels like home, while reflecting on his experience of competing in the World Legends Pro T20 League and the challenges faced by retired players returning to competitive cricket. Watson said tournaments of this nature play an important role in keeping former international stars connected to the game long after their professional careers have ended.
Watson explained that remaining match ready in a legends league requires a careful balance between physical preparation and self management. Even for players who spent years competing at the highest level, the demands of competitive cricket can be testing once the body is no longer accustomed to daily training and match intensity. He noted that players must push themselves enough to be competitive while also ensuring they do not strain their bodies beyond safe limits.
According to Watson, skill preparation becomes the most critical aspect of readiness in such tournaments. Batting, bowling and fielding skills need to be sharpened to meet match conditions, while physical fitness has to be managed intelligently across games. He pointed out that once players stop playing professional cricket regularly, the body responds differently, making recovery and workload management a major challenge.
Despite these demands, Watson expressed confidence that experienced players are capable of adapting to these conditions with the right mindset and preparation. He emphasised that legends tournaments are not only about competition, but also about enjoyment, camaraderie and reconnecting with the sport in a meaningful way.
Watson also spoke warmly about playing in Goa, describing the atmosphere, surroundings and support as familiar and welcoming. He said the environment adds to the overall experience and allows players to focus on enjoying the game while still competing seriously.
The World Legends Pro T20 League, Watson added, offers former cricketers an opportunity to relive the thrill of match play, engage with fans and remain active within the cricketing ecosystem. For many retired players, such platforms provide both motivation and a renewed sense of purpose, proving that the connection to the game does not end with retirement.
