CANACONA: The Goa Forward Party (GFP) has announced its decision to contest both Zilla Panchayat (ZP) seats in Canacona taluka. The resolution was taken during a party workers’ meeting held on Wednesday evening at the GFP office in Chaudi.
Speaking at the meeting, senior General Secretary Mohandas Lolayekar said, “Our party workers have traditionally supported other candidates in this taluka for ZP, Assembly, and parliamentary elections. Now the time has come for us to field our own candidates on the party ticket.”
Addressing the gathering, General Secretary (Organisation) Durgadas Kamat stated that party president Vijai Sardessai has approved contesting both the Poinguinim and Khola ZP seats. He urged party workers to start preparations for the elections immediately.
Other leaders who addressed the workers included General Secretary Prashant Naik, Environment Cell Convenor Vikas Bhagat, and Block President Datta Gaokar. Probable candidates for the seats were also shortlisted during the meeting.
Prashant Naik further emphasized the urgency of the State Election Commission declaring reservations for constituencies, including those reserved for women, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. “Failure to declare the reservations on time may compel us to approach the courts, similar to what happened in the last municipal elections when the party moved the Supreme Court to address faulty reservations,” he added.
