PANAJI: Goa has achieved a major milestone with the registration of five new Geographical Indication (GI) tags, marking a significant step towards protecting the State’s rich agricultural heritage and traditional knowledge.
The newly registered Goan GI products are Taleigao Vayingim (Taleigao Brinjal), Goa Hilario Mango, Goa Korgut Rice, Goa Kaju Apple, and Goa Mussarad Mango.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant hailed the achievement, calling it a proud moment for the State.
“Goa has achieved a significant milestone with the registration of five new Geographical Indication tags, celebrating our State’s rich agricultural heritage and traditional wisdom. These GI tags will strengthen the Swayampurna Goa Mission by empowering our farmers, preserving indigenous varieties, enhancing market recognition, and generating sustainable livelihood opportunities across rural Goa,” said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
The Chief Minister added that GI recognition would play a crucial role in economic development, agri-entrepreneurship and rural prosperity.
“By protecting Goa’s unique produce and boosting value addition, these GI recognitions will contribute to economic development, promote agri-entrepreneurship, and proudly showcase Goa’s identity to the world,” he said.
Sawant also congratulated farmers, growers, institutions and all stakeholders involved in securing the GI tags.
“Heartiest congratulations to our farmers, growers, institutions and all stakeholders who made this achievement possible. Together, we continue to build a self-reliant and prosperous Goa,” the Chief Minister added.
The GI tags are expected to enhance market visibility for Goan agricultural products, ensure better returns for farmers, and help preserve indigenous crop varieties for future generations.
