PANAJI: The Goa government has confirmed that an International Cricket Stadium will be constructed at Dhargal in Pernem taluka, and not at Ona Maulinguem, as clarified by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Dr Ramesh Tawadkar in the Legislative Assembly.
Replying to a question, the Minister said the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs has received a proposal for the construction of an International Cricket Stadium through the Goa Cricket Association (GCA), aimed at providing exposure to Goan cricketers, youth and the public.
He informed the House that the government has already acquired land admeasuring 9,19,789 square metres at Dhargal, Pernem, out of which 1,89,930 square metres has been allotted on lease to the Goa Cricket Association specifically for the construction of the stadium.
Dr Tawadkar categorically stated that no land has been acquired at Ona Maulinguem for the purpose of an international cricket stadium and added that no proposal regarding Ona Maulinguem has been received by the department so far.
The Minister further clarified that the International Cricket Stadium will be constructed by the Goa Cricket Association, and that a lease agreement has already been signed between the government and the GCA. As per the agreement, all necessary payments have been made by the association till date.
He also noted that the 10-year lease period will be completed in 2028.
