PORVORIM: Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar stated on Wednesday that Selaulim reservoir water had to be preserved, citing a 2032 water scarcity that could affect the entire South Goa area.
In an address to the state legislature, Shirodkar stated that the water resources department intends to preserve the water in the Selaulim reservoir by using water from the River Kushavati. The Xelvon settlement in Quepem Taluka is where the River Kushavati empties into the River Zuari.
According to the minister, South Goa as a whole may have a water crisis in seven to eight years if such actions are not done immediately. “If we extract water from the Kushavati River, Selaulim Dam will have more water during the summer,” he stated.
Sanguem, Quepem, Salcete, Mormugao, and a portion of Borim village in Ponda taluka are served by the Selaulim reservoir.
The dam is situated at the Guleli River, a Zuari River tributary. The reservoir water spread area is 24 square kilometres, and the dam’s length at the crest is 1,004 meters.
The volume content of the dam structure is 2.714 million cubic meters (MCM). The reservoir has a gross storage capacity of 234.361 MCM and a fixed live or effective storage capacity of 227.157 MCM.
