PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant revealed that the Goa government is considering issuing an ordinance to legalize irregular land holdings, with the condition of strict adherence to the High Court’s guidelines. Speaking after a high-level meeting with ministers, officials, and the chief secretary regarding the court’s demolition order, Sawant made it clear that illegal constructions, including those on government land, would not be tolerated.
“We are looking into the possibility of an ordinance to regularize irregular land holdings, but this will be done strictly as per the directions of the High Court,” the Chief Minister stated. He emphasized that “no illegal construction will be allowed,” and district collectors have been instructed to follow the court’s orders, which may include demolishing unauthorized structures where necessary.
Revenue Minister Atanasio Monserrate, however, clarified that the High Court has not yet directed any demolitions. “The High Court has only requested a report at this point, and there has been no order to demolish any structures,” Monserrate said. He also confirmed that the government intends to remove encroachments on land acquired for road widening projects.
Sawant had previously warned that any new illegal construction would have administrative consequences. “If any new illegal structures are built, it will be noted in the confidential report of the concerned officer,” he warned.
The Chief Minister also updated the public on the Goa Regularisation of Unauthorised Constructions Act, stating that out of 10,000 applications for regularization, only 2,000 have been approved so far due to technical issues. “We will continue to give an opportunity to regularize irregular constructions, but illegal actions will not be tolerated,” Sawant affirmed.
