PANAJI: In a significant move to declutter and utilize government assets, the Goa Cabinet on Wednesday decided to auction all vehicles that are currently off-the-road.
The decision, announced by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, is aimed at addressing the growing number of unused government vehicles across the state.
During a media briefing following the state cabinet meeting, Dr. Sawant revealed that more than 200 vehicles, which have been lying idle due to various conditions, will be auctioned through melas to be held in Margao (South Goa) and Mapusa (North Goa).
The initiative is part of an effort to streamline government resources and reduce maintenance costs associated with these idle vehicles.
“Vehicles that are less than 15 years old can be purchased by the public and put to use,” said Dr. Sawant. “However, any vehicles that are over 15 years old will need to be bought and scrapped, as they will not be permitted to be used again on the roads.”
Among the vehicles set to be auctioned, the Chief Minister noted that there are 34 vehicles which are under 15 years old and are eligible for reuse by buyers.
Additionally, Dr. Sawant made an appeal to the people of Goa to report any government vehicles that have been abandoned or parked on roadsides for extended periods. He urged citizens to notify the state government so that these vehicles can be properly addressed.
The auction will provide an opportunity for the public to acquire these vehicles, while also enabling the government to clear its backlog of unused assets.
The move is expected to contribute to the efficient utilization of state resources.
